A new expanse of lacquer

For the 13th exhibition, the Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition 2023 received 169 entries from 8 nations and regions.
At the Preliminary Assessment of images held in April 2023, 80 works (7 nations/regions) were selected. For the Final Assessment of the originals, 79 works (7 nations/regions) were sent to the Executive Office. The Final Assessment was held on July 6, 2023, and 16 prize winners were selected.
The following day on July 7, 2023, a Special Symposium was held where the Executive Committee reported the results of the Final Assessment, and the members of the Panel gave their comments on the prize winners. In addition, the panelists discussed their thoughts on the future of Urushi art. We would like to present that discussion.
